How to Prepare for a Sugar Hair Removal Service

Sugar hair removal is a service done to remove unnecessary facial and body hair. Sugar products are room temperature and made with water, so the area being sugared must be clean and dry with no oils or dirt on the skin. To have a successful sugaring experience, clients are expected to shower right before the sugaring, or if unable to, they are to freshen up before the service. Additionally, bringing clean clothes such as fresh underwear for after the sugaring will help keep the area clean.

Many clients want to know the best length for their hair to grow out before being sugared. I recommend 21 days from the last shave. Some clients ask me what happens if their hair is too long. I recommend a client's first appointment to see me is before they trim their hair. Many clients trim their hair too short so I recommend they leave it alone even if they believe it is too long.

Exfoliating in the shower the day of the appointment, or two days before, will help take off any excess dead skin. If worried about pain, do not drink caffeine prior to your first appointment and take a pain pill such as Tylenol or Ibuprofen.

In short:

  • Shower before your appointment. If possible, exfoliate with a rough washcloth or physical exfoliant. Do not put on lotion or makeup.

  • Take a Tylenol or Ibuprofen 30 minutes prior to your appointment.

  • Before your first ever sugaring appointment, do not drink caffeine. This will make your first sugaring the least painful. Caffeine opens up your capillaries and can make the experience uncomfortable.

  • Make sure to bring clean clothes and underwear to wear after your sugaring experience.

  • Many clients will have to maintain an aftercare routine between each sugaring appointment.

  • Exfoliating weekly as well as moisturizing with a water based moisturizer is recommended. This aftercare step is really important in keeping the skin healthy and in supporting new hair growth to come out without itching, ingrown hairs, or other skin concerns.

  • Appointments should be made every three to five weeks if you want to remove your hair on a consistent basis.

  • Hair removal every three to five weeks is less painful than coming every few months. It also slows down and weakens hair growth.
